Empowering Omaha’s Future: Plumbers Local 16 Partners with Omaha Public Schools’ Trades Camp Series

In a fast-evolving world, the need for skilled professionals in the trades is more vital than ever. Recognizing this, Plumbers Local 16 is thrilled to partner with Omaha Public Schools (OPS) in their Trades Camp Series, a groundbreaking initiative designed to introduce students to rewarding career opportunities in the trades industry.

This partnership is more than just about filling job vacancies; it’s about shaping futures and strengthening our community. Through hands-on workshops, OPS students can explore a wide variety of trades, with Local 16’s skilled plumbers guiding them every step of the way. Our experts bring real-world experience and passion to the program, mentoring students in the tools, techniques, and skills needed for success in the industry.

Each year, Local 16’s commitment to training future tradespeople has grown, with our union supporting OPS students through practical sessions, industry insights, and advice on navigating the path toward apprenticeships and beyond. By offering our members as mentors, students gain firsthand knowledge and build invaluable connections within the trades community.

New Clothing Drive | Foster Love

November - December 15th, 2023 at the Local 16 Hall

This year’s MCA-Omaha Women in the Mechanical Industry committee’s community service project is a new clothing drive for Foster Love! Foster Love’s mission is to provide basic needs and opportunities for children and families impacted by foster care so they feel confident, empowered, and valued. They offer a unique boutique-like shopping experience at their storefront so children can choose new clothing, shoes, and accessories that fit their personality and make them feel confident and comfortable.

All clothing collected must be new items. Some items currently needed:

Men & Women Winter Tops - Sizes S - XXL
Ethnic Hair Care Products
Boys Boxer Briefs - Sizes 4T - XL(14/16)

2023 NEF Block Kids Building Contest

Local 16 participates in the annual NEF Block Kids event

Each year NAWIC Omaha puts on a free LEGO building block contest for kids in grades K-6. The NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) promotes the Construction Industry through educational events throughout the year, including Block Kids. Block Kids is an annual event designed to familiarize Elementary School age children with the construction process by using their imagination, creativity, and knowledge to build something today and possibly for the future. Participants from grades K-6 are given a maximum of one hour to use their blocks & selected items to build a project that is somehow related to the construction industry.

The top four “Builders” receive prizes of approximately $50. An overall winner will move on to the Midwest Regional Block Kids Contest for a chance to compete in the NEF National Block Kids Contest. This year, Local 16 was honored to participate alongside NAWIC Omaha Chapter 116 with a handful of our dedicated apprentices who took the time to help out with this awesome, educational event for the next generation of tradesmen and women!

Local 16 Rings the Bells this Holiday Season

With the utmost gratitude, the Officers, staff, retirees, instructors, apprentices, and members of Local 16 are saying thank you and goodbye to our beloved Gail Granger. After twenty-five dedicated years of service to our Local, she begins her hard earned and well-deserved retirement. Gail has been an invaluable asset to our family. She has been taking care of our retirees, our licenses, our apprenticeship, and VA benefits for our veteran apprentices among countless tasks that have kept this place running throughout the years.

From the bottom of all our hearts, thank you for everything and here’s to kicking off your next big adventure! We will all miss you.

This year they chose to benefit Omaha's Siena Francis House.
